SAN DIEGO, CA — A group of San Diego artists and Art galleries will present their works of art at the first ever Art Above San Diego on Saturday, October 5 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event aims to promote the work of creative people and businesses in San Diego, while engaging the public at large.

Art Above San Diego will be presented atop the 6,000 sq. ft. Ripassi Roof Deck at the Porto Vista Hotel, overlooking the harbor and Little Italy. The event is curated by Eighteen o Five, a Contemporary Art gallery and studio space located in Little Italy, showcasing unique work by local artists.

Artists will transform the rooftop’s cabanas into unique booths to create the feel of a contemporary art fair that is accessible to the public. All artists are participating free of charge and make 100 percent commission on sales that occur during the event, both decisions Eighteen o Five’s owner Lauren Siry says bolster her commitment to keeping art accessible in San Diego.

“I wanted to bring different types of galleries from all over San Diego into one location to expose multiple, very diverse art spaces you don’t normally see alongside one another,” said Siry. “I’m hoping the event will foster a more unified art district in San Diego. It’s taking galleries from downtown San Diego, neighborhoods like North Park, Point Loma, Normal Heights, Littly Italy and bringing them all together to form a strong network.”

The exhibition will feature collective works from some of San Diego’s most exciting emerging artists and art galleries. The show will feature Art Lab, Chrome Digital, Thumbprint Gallery, Kettner Arts, Molotov Gallery, Low Gallery, Bread and Salt, Maru Lopez, as well as collaboration with Hill & Stump, photographer Marshall Vanderhoof and glass artist Joyce Rooks. In addition, The Buy Art Campaign will do silk screen demonstrations and showcase work created during collaborative events by Arte Fresca and Bettinatime. Live collaborative painting will be executed by Bearcat Tattoo Gallery, as well as Michelle D. Ferrera and wood-burning artist, Jorge Pina.

Eighteen o Five will feature a number of artists at the event including works on paper by Lauren Siry, kinetic metal sculptures and video projections by Carrie Ferguson, as well as works by Lacey Kay, Kim Niehans, Bradford Lynn, Francis Calimlim, Artie Mattson, Ashley Gerber, Molli Koltun, Jen Jansen and Jon Janulewicz.

Nose to the Grind is a coffee, tea, and wine shop, founded on the premise of being a "playground" for coffee lovers. The shop will be offering samples of their perfect cup-o-joe.

Porto Vista Hotel’s premier restaurant The Glass Door will provide drink specials, small bites and fare.

Siry says she hopes the event will become a regular affair that gives the public greater exposure to the city’s art spaces and businesses. She plans to rotate featured artists in coming years.

“So many artists, especially in San Diego, can’t afford to show their work. An event like this will allow them the opportunity to connect with the public and other galleries in a non-competitive climate and without high costs,” says Siry. “For the public, it’s a way to break down the walls with art spaces and the larger unified art community in a way that’s not intimidating.”

Art Above San Diego will run for one night only on Saturday, October 5 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Porto Vista Hotel’s Ripassi Roof Deck, 1835 Columbia Street, San Diego. The event is free and open to all, with a $5 donation requested at the door.
