As a whole, the art world has bastardized the process of art making. At this point, we've reached the fullest potential of abstraction, thus rendering it obsolete. Abstraction has played a key role in practically all works of art for 100+ years and continues to be in the limelight. The art world will continue to devalue work, materials and concepts until art becomes pointless. Raw materials are all the rage. Ingots created out of modern 'raw' materials alleviate the necessity of artistic arrangement. By creating the material that in turn enables the artist to create the work, we can potentially monopolize the artistic process. If we can in effect take control of the entire ritual (materials, tools, process, object, business, collection, curation, repair), we can change the game and stop relying on politics, gender studies and social issues to garner the attention of new viewers. Maybe then finally lay the conceptual beast to rest.
