Icarus

PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST | ICARUS SERIES

The Icarus Series investigates the constant mingling of contraries within oneself.   The myth of Icarus describes a young child escaping an enemy over a vast ocean with only a pair of wax wings fashioned from found scraps. If he nears the sun his wings will melt and if he approaches the waterline his wings will soak. The excitement of flight fills the boy and he accelerates until his wings can no longer bare the heat. Consumed by his own passion Icarus falls to his demise.

Alluding to Icarus, Siry examines the struggle of balance between passion and intellect, the feminine and masculine, control and chaos, and failure and success. The fate of Icarus illuminates the consequences of imbalance and the necessity of self-reflection.
