Parallel Screens is a group exhibition that presents moving image artworks in a continuum  duration scheme where artworks are screened one after the other for the duration of the exhibition: 120 minutes. Once finished the circle re-starts and the exhibition is exhibited again and again. The screening occurs through a two video, one audio channel circuit where the TV screens are in parallel position, facing each other.

The general idea of moving images is ingrained in everyday life, with rapid technological development, such as the rise of 5G wireless, there is an almost infinitute of content in a multitude of subjects. TV and internet content are now mixed, for example with YouTube offering TV packages and traditional channels relying on internet streamings to understand consumer habits further and develop tailored entertainment.

Correspondence is a group art exhibition inside a Vending Machine at the Porto Vista Hotel. Original poems, postcards, paintings, sculptures, drawings, and limited edition video artworks will be available for purchase 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Vending Machine Project aims to democratize art distribution and reinvigorate encounters with contemporary art. 

While in residence, Katie Ruiz will create a series of paintings that depict figurative forms engaging with brightly colored geometric shapes and patterns inspired by the Otomi tribes of Central  Mexico. Otomi textiles are well known in the Central Valley of Mexico for their intricately embroidered clothing and blankets that depict abstract animals and plants. Identifying herself as a Chicana artist, Ruiz relates her experience growing up in the desert landscape of Arizona to the imagery of the semi-desert origins of the Otomi people. Like the Otomi culture, Ruiz embraces elements of the natural world in her artwork, painting fictional mountain ranges and pathways for coupled figures veiled in decorative blankets. As the Otomi people thrive off the global sales of their vibrant textiles, Ruiz emphasizes the blanket as a significant symbol of unification and celebrates its potential to transcend diverse individuals and cultures. 

Porto Vista Hotel is pleased to welcome the first Curator in Residence, Brunno Silva. The Berlin-based Independent Curator will live and work on site at the Porto Vista Hotel in San Diego from May 6, 2019 through July 18, 2019.  While in residence, Silva will explore critical conversations surrounding the moving-image through a series of lectures, seminars, studio visits and exhibitions that are free and open to the public.  From Andy Warhol to Hito Steyerl, Silva will examine how video art has altered the art production landscape.  

In collaboration with Porto Vista Hotel, 1805 Gallery is pleased to present Cloths of Heaven, by Siobhán Arnold.

Cloths of Heaven 2010 is a series of original photographs inspired by the art historical representation of female figures from biblical, allegorical, and mythological narratives.

Drawing largely from the late Mannerist and Baroque periods of European painting, the images are reinterpreted "mise en scenes". Arnold is interested in the use of fabric and drapery as a pictorial device accentuating the stories of the women represented in these compositions.

1805 Gallery is thrilled to present Every Fragment • A Prayer: Yasmine K. Kasem. Yasmine Kasem will complete a residency at 1805 Gallery from December 21, 2018  through January 19, 2019  followed by an exhibition of works created while on site. The exhibition will run from January 24, 2019 through February 23, 2019. While in residence, Kasem will tear cotton piping into strands, weaving them together to form Islamic prayer rugs that will be saturated with fabric dyes and transferred onto sheets of paper. As an Egyptian-American artist Kasem explores elements of her layered identity within her practice closely examining the struggle in merging her Islamic religion and untraditional lifestyle, and her submission to accept both as a unified identity. The transfer of pigments and cotton from the saturated prayer rugs materializes the tension inherent of her religious and sexual identity.

In collaboration with Porto Vista Hotel, 1805 Gallery is thrilled to present Jenessa Goodman as the featured artist in the Hotel’s lobby this Fall from October 10 through November 24, 2018. Goodman will exhibit a series of gouache and ink paintings that are inspired by the mystical and spiritual aspects of everyday life. Her work is composed of imagery derived from dreams, nature and patterns of human movement. An artist reception will be held on October 10, 2018 from 6 to 8 PM. Refreshments provided by the Porto Vista Hotel.

1805 Gallery is pleased to present To Do • A Mending Project, a collaborative residency with artists Michelle Montjoy, Anna O'Cain and Siobhán Arnold. To Do • A Mending Project is a response to the escalating political, social and economic tensions in the United States that has increased divisions within communities.

In support of inclusivity and open communication, To Do will host free workshops focused on acts of repair from October 5 through November 6, 2018 .  An artist reception will be held on Thursday, October 4, from 6-8PM. To Do will guide community participants in knitting holes in sweaters, repairing jewelry, changing flat tires, and joining in simple activities like breathing or reading silently together.  This project encourages mending actions as a mode of sustainability and creative community engagement.
